As Nine searches for a new direction following Karl Stefanovic’s departure, a bold behind-the-scenes proposal is reportedly gaining momentum—one that could transform Today more dramatically than at any point in its history.
According to television insiders, executives are considering relocating the breakfast program from Sydney to Melbourne as part of a sweeping overhaul aimed at reversing years of declining ratings.

A Melbourne Move Could Signal a Fresh Start
The proposal would see Today broadcast from Melbourne for the first time, creating a clear distinction from rival Sunrise, which continues to be produced in Sydney.
Industry sources say the plan isn’t entirely new. Former Nine chief executive Sam Chisholm reportedly floated the same idea more than two decades ago, believing Melbourne offered an untapped opportunity to reshape the struggling breakfast program.
Now, with Today continuing to trail Sunrise in the ratings, the idea is said to be back under serious consideration.
Sarah Abo Reportedly at the Centre of the Rebuild
If the overhaul proceeds, Sarah Abo is expected to become the face of the program’s next era.
The Melbourne-born journalist, widely respected for her news credentials, is reportedly viewed as the natural figure to lead a refreshed Today from 2027.
However, the timing presents another challenge.
Abo is preparing to begin maternity leave, leaving the network to navigate a significant transition while simultaneously searching for Karl Stefanovic’s long-term successor.

Familiar Faces Could Also Be Affected
The reported revamp may extend well beyond the main hosting role.
Several long-serving Today personalities are believed to be under review as executives consider reshaping the entire on-air team.
Veteran entertainment reporter Richard Wilkins—one of Stefanovic’s closest colleagues for many years—is among those whose future is reportedly uncertain.
Sports presenter Danika Mason has also been linked to the possible restructuring, although she recently announced her pregnancy, adding another layer of uncertainty to any future plans.
Television insiders believe the network wants to create a more balanced presenting team after years of the program revolving around Stefanovic’s larger-than-life personality.
New Names Already Being Discussed
Several experienced Nine personalities have reportedly emerged as potential additions to a revamped lineup.
Tom Steinfort has been mentioned as a possible co-host alongside Sarah Abo, while respected broadcaster Zan Rowe is viewed as a strong candidate to strengthen the entertainment segment.
Former Weekend Today presenter Clint Stanaway has also been identified as someone capable of returning in either a news or sports role.
Could an Unexpected Star Replace Karl?
Perhaps the biggest surprise is the emergence of actor Rodger Corser as a possible contender.
The Doctor Doctor star has become a favourite of Nine’s television chief Michael Healy after returning to the network to host The Floor.
With no confirmation yet on whether The Floor will return for another season, insiders believe Corser could now be available for a move into breakfast television—a shift that would represent one of the most unexpected casting decisions in recent years.
Nine Faces Its Biggest Breakfast TV Gamble in Years
Despite the ambitious proposal, significant obstacles remain.
Relocating production would involve major logistical changes and additional costs at a time when Nine is already under pressure to control spending.
The network has refused to comment on speculation surrounding a Melbourne move or its plans for Today‘s future.
For now, the broadcaster’s strategy remains firmly behind closed doors.
But with ratings continuing to slide and Karl Stefanovic’s departure marking the end of an era, industry observers believe Nine may be preparing its boldest breakfast television reset in decades.
