A life-changing diagnosis
Australian television presenter and former Australian Crawl drummer David Reyne has shared a deeply personal health update, revealing he underwent major surgery earlier this year after being diagnosed with prostate cancer.
The 67-year-old said the diagnosis forced him to confront one of life’s most confronting realities.
“You’re staring down mortality,” he told nine.com.au, describing the emotional impact of learning he had cancer.

Preparing for the biggest challenge
David revealed he underwent a complex five-hour robotic operation and spent weeks preparing both physically and mentally for the procedure.
Among the preparations was dedicated pelvic floor training, something he admitted he had never imagined becoming so important.
He also spoke of his fascination with the advanced robotic technology used during the surgery, describing the experience as remarkable despite the circumstances.
Fortunately, the operation was successful, with David saying he came through the procedure “with flying colours.”

The emotional journey doesn’t end with treatment
While the surgery marked an important milestone in his recovery, David said the emotional impact of a cancer diagnosis can linger long after the operation is over.
He explained that living with cancer creates a constant sense of uncertainty, describing it as a shadow that quietly follows you even when treatment has finished.
Only after coming through the experience did he begin to truly appreciate the optimism and gratitude he now feels each day.
A renewed appreciation for life
Rather than slowing down, David says the experience has given him a fresh outlook on life.
He describes himself as feeling more positive than ever, embracing each opportunity with renewed enthusiasm and optimism.
That new perspective arrives at a particularly meaningful time, as he prepares to reunite with his brother, James Reyne, and fellow members of Australian Crawl for performances on this year’s Red Hot Summer Tour.
The reunion carries special significance for David, who was the band’s original drummer before leaving in 1979 to pursue an acting career, shortly before the group achieved national success.
Looking ahead with hope
Despite everything he has endured, David says his passion for work remains unchanged.
Whether it’s television, music or new creative projects, he believes staying active and always having something to look forward to is what keeps life fulfilling.
After facing one of the greatest challenges of his life, David Reyne is now focusing less on what he has been through and more on making the most of every opportunity that lies ahead—a mindset he says has filled his life with renewed joy.
